Things To Do Before I’m 30

We’ve all heard of a bucket list: a list of things to do before you die. But there are some things that are kind of time sensitive. Some things that you’ll enjoy more if you do them when society still considers you young. And there are some things which, beyond a certain age, you simply won’t be physically able to do. So rather than jumping straight for a list of things to do before I die, I came up with a list of Things To Do Before I’m 30.

The List

(in no particular order other than the order they came into my head)

(A work in progress)

  1. Visit the Serenghetti (already done, but want to do it again)
  2. Start an online business (Completed: Read about it here)
  3. Make it successful
  4. Have a successful blog (this one)
  5. Become a millionaire
  6. Run a marathon
  7. Dye my hair blue
  8. Visit Hong Kong
  9. Visit Antartica
  10. Visit the Amazon Basin
  11. Visit Egypt
  12. Visit Las Vegas and see all the famous magic shows including Lance Burton, Penn & Teller and David Copperfield
  13. Get an article published in a magazine or newspaper
  14. Write a best-selling book
  15. Write a song (or ten)
  16. Go snowboarding in Canada
  17. Camp my way across Africa
  18. Go to a music festival
  19. Make national news (in a good way)
  20. Experience weightlessness
  21. Do a parachute jump
  22. Learn to fly a plane
  23. Learn to dance
  24. Have a crack at stand-up comedy
  25. Meet Dave Gorman
  26. Meet Danny Wallace
  27. Meet Derren Brown
  28. Figure out once and for all if there’s a God or not
  29. Raise a million pounds for charity
  30. Hold a world record
  31. Get back in touch with everybody I used to know at school
  32. Make a magic TV special
  33. Do a stage magic show
  34. Be in a pantomime
  35. Start a band
  36. Make a film
  37. Be on Have I Got News For You
  38. Watch a live Wimbledon final
  39. Be on the radio
  40. Appear in a (Bond) movie
  41. Perform magic to Keira Knightley  (Suggested by Cal in Comment 4. Added 29th September 2009)
  42. See the Earth from the edge of space (Added in response to seeing “James May on The Moon“)
  43. Meet Miss Right
  44. Marry her
  45. Design my dream home
  46. Build it (or probably more correctly, “Get it Built”… I’m not doing it myself)
  47. (Conditional upon completion of all – or nearly all – other entries) Have a very big 30th Birthday Party

Points to note:

1. While I hope this challenge is interesting to read about and attracts a lot of readers who will follow my progress, I should say in advance that this is NOT a setup. There is no guarantee that the outcome is going to be like a film, where everything works out. Given some of the lofty ambitions on the list, it is likely that I will fail some tasks…. Just so you know….

2. When I wrote the list, I gave no thought to whether the entries would be doable or not. If I wanted to do it, I put it on the list. Simple. This was an exercise in fantasy not an exercise in realism.

3. From doing this, I hope to demonstrate a couple of things. First, that many things are not nearly as impossible as the majority of people seem to think they are. Second, that if you can identify what you want to do, and figure out a method by which to do it, almost anything is possible.

If you can think of anything you think should be added to the list, please post a comment… If I agree, I’ll add it to the list

  3. You’ve got some lofty dreams, fella. I would laugh but something makes me want to reserve judgement and see whether you’re a talker or a doer. Good luck is all I can say.

  4. Hey Jake, I’m a magician too. And I think you should have on your list “Perform to…” and the name of the one person in the world that you’d really like to perform to.
